PPD - Group Tutorial Prep - Task 2

WHAT IS INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE ?

It's important to realise that there is more in the world of design as well as what you learn from the course. You can only improve by gaining greater knowledge to create a further understanding of the industrial practice of Graphic Design.

Experience is gained by development, thought process and strategy. Alongside the most important approach to learning. Design is a bout doing, you need to be able to constantly enforce a successful solution to a problem and not be disheartened about going wrong. You have to learn from your mistakes in order to reflect back on the process you took to get there.

By being out in the industrial world, away from the closed community of college you will be able to see what potentially you can gain, in terms of design. The only way you can get experience is by actually going out there and doing something, without worrying if you cannot achieve what you want to. You need to be able to learn all the processes that fall into place with your particular field in order to progress.

- Creating a well thought out strategy that will allow you to become successful in a practice of Graphic Design, that will ultimately reflect on your final outcomes towards of a clients brief.

- Becoming experienced in a range of different design processes will allow you to expand your boundaries and potential ideas from a brief.

- Actually producing a piece of design that you get paid for, will allow your confidence to improve as you know it can be achieved.

WHAT CAN YOU LEARN FROM INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE ?

You can learn a significant amount from industrial experience, that will not only reflect in your work but also improve your work ethic. This will allow you the demonstrate the skills you have required to the full potential, creating endless possibilities to a brief.

- How to approach clients and professionally contact them in a manner that will ultimately reflect back on you in good light.

- By actually being there, producing work for clients will allow you to constantly improve your design skills and design thought process.

- Costs will be a massive impact on any design brief, in order to make the most from the price given, you will be able to learn all the processes and manufacturers that will be able to help you keep that price down.

WHAT FORM/FORMAT COULD INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE TAKE?

Industrial experience can take a variety of different forms/formats allowing you to develop a number of potential skills. The main format would be actually getting out into the industrial world and start building a successful career for myself. Realistically I want to be part of collective/designers that have the same mind set and interests in producing work for clients. I've recently watched a video for a hand screen printing company (dislike the word company) with their main aim to produce heart felt pieces of design work, hand crafted with their main focus on producing the best they can.

WHAT AREAS OF INDUSTRY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN ?

At the moment my main priority as such is to be involved within 'Secret Wars' a global underground competition where artists alike take their skills to create live art murals, that ultimately get voted on within the audience. With this focus in mind, I'm currently building up a collection of drawings and portfolio pieces that I think are suitable to applying for a chance to be part of it.

WHAT ARE YOU CONCERNS ABOUT INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE ?

Initially my main concerns are pretty much starting out as a designer in the real world. By allowing myself to be open minded of what direction I could branch off into within fields of design is ultimately the key starting point to developing myself throughout a career. Obviously there are financial/tax/income issues that I need to asses before hand, so I guess these are my main concerns as I am unaware of how to approach these.
