PINPOINT: Mock Up Publication / Website

-

This is a printed mock up of the potential pinpoint magazine. Myself and Michael had the task of coming up with a cover, a couple of spreads and effectively what the overall composition of te zine would look like. We tried to keep the cover relatively similar to the content of the inside. Keeping it contemporary, modern and minimal in design.

DIGITAL -

WEBSITE -

This was another key element to the design aspect of Pinpoint. The website, I decided to relate the overall design and layout, to a similar feel as the magazine itself. This way there would be a direct relation with the company and the printed piece of design.

A website is a way to target millions of viewers as it's easier to distribute across the internet. Effectively, we would have a base for our business that could increase our profit margins massively.

PINPOINT - Group Workshop

-

This evenings session was put into place as an opportunity to catch up on the more important aspects to our, hypothetical business. Amongst the whole idea and concept for our potential product, a magazine offering the audience a chance to view British design. Including a number of key elements such as; Illustration, Photography, Graphic Design and Typography. This focus would effectively allow us to ensure the readers are reaching the most recent and up to date pieces of design work, that has solely been driven and created within the United Kingdom . By doing this, we effectively have a collation and collection of UK designers that could be viewed across a wide audience.

There would be an easy sense of style in relation to the approach British designers take. By doing this people could easily determine what exactly is happening within the United Kingdom so far. Ultimately a progressive magazine that is forever staying modern.

-

Our actual session revolved around the most important aspects we had to deal with. The business plan & the finance. Once we had understood this, broke it down and calculated the overall effects, we would be able to collate the information and use it across our presentation. Michael Mooney, Alex Slippens and myself drew our ideas, and potential plan across a number of worksheets, allowing us to break down and understand what we were doing and were going to do.

WORKSHEETS -

For everyone that contributed to this session, I have taken photographs of today and placed them in a PDF document for my group contributors.

The cover and layout were designed by myself as I feel the most comfortable using design when I am in a group.

PINPOINT: Group Session

\

Today we had a meeting, that allowed us to basically summarise what we all need to do in terms of; research, finance, context and content. Alongside this we cleared up any worries or lack of direction that each of us may have had. In order to market our magazine and company, we need to each to essential research that would allow us develop our enterprise.

PINPOINT : Design Work / Ideas

-

Obviously, there needs to be some hint of Graphic Design work throughout the company, otherwise it wouldn't have a face. As of yet, we are not really sure on the final direction in which we are going to take the business in, or how the design work will ultimately look. I am just playing around with a few ideas to allow a visual understanding on how it could possibly look.

Enterprise - PINPOINT

GROUP MEMBERS -

* Mitch Weaver
* Luis Bachini
* Michael Mooney
* Alex Slippens

COMPANY NAME -

To begin with, this was the hardest task to deal with as we did not want to come up with a name that is generic and implies the wrong idea. Although the name is not too important as the aim is to build a successful business. We felt that this was a much more direct aspect in which we would be able to understand exactly what it is we are pushing for.

Pinpoint came out on top of our ideas. Essentially the word speaks for itself, direct and targeted. Much like how we want to promote ourselves throughout the market. With this in mind we now have a easier route to what it is we are actually setting up.

LOGO DESIGNS -

Potential logo / Typeface ideas. These have been developed by myself, as I want to take a more geometric and minimalist route into branding the company. Also I feel that it clearly represents graphic design from a first glance. Although there is not much show of colour, I am going to briefly go over rough ideas to gain a better visual understanding.

CONTEXT & CONTENT -

What we are / do ? - A visual magazine showcasing upcoming designers, illustrators, typography and photography. With a main aim to help promote and showcase graduates, freelance designers.

The idea is to create a monthly magazine that allows the audience to connect with up coming designers. Essentially allowing the features to get exposure. We want to focus on the main fields of trade as this would allow a clear path to take the magazine in to.

Enterprise - Who else is out there ? How good are they?

[ Note: It's important to realise this is not a direct or personal attack at one's work and approach to design. It is merely a critique for personal reference for this task. Also writing down weaknesses is not easy as I feel none of the creatives have any, or noticeable from their design work ]

THREE DESIGNERS/ILLUSTRATORS:-

- Mcbess
- Eye of Providence Design
- Monorex

-------

MCBESS

STRENGTHS:-

- Strong, bold & iconic Illustrative style. Separates from other professionals.
- Attention to detail creates crucial flow and balance.
- Black & White used effectively, no need for colour.
- Multi-format Illustration, digital and hand drawn both used effectively and efficiently.
- Clear sense of layout, type and depth. Not just pieces of art.

WEAKNESSES:-

- Illustrations could become time consuming, increasing cost.
- Not to everyones taste, but I guess that comes down personal preference.
- Freelance could cause lack of a steady income, saying that I don't think McBess will be short of clients.
- Not using colour could limit potential clients, but that comes down to personal style.

EYE OF PROVIDENCE DESIGN

STRENGTHS:-

- Intricate pieces of traditional styled tattoo flash Illustration.
- Multi-functional. Primarily based for t-shirt design/band merchandise.
- Clear sense of passion to approaching each piece, nothing is rushed.
- Being freelance allows the artist to be approached by various briefs/bands. Creates a diverse portfolio.
- Unique style reflects traditional tattoo pieces but the style has been more forwarded.

WEAKNESSES:-

- Illustrative pieces could become time consuming and result in an increase of cost.
- Hardcore/Metal genre is not to everyones taste, possible loss of cliental, again this would come down to personal preference.

MONOREX

STRENGTHS:-

- Being a worldwide creative agency allows a number of opportunities to expand and create.
- Using street cultured art creates a different and unique direction to responding to clients.
- Taking on big brands and creating unique campaigns grasps the market in a positive manner.
- Not having a corporate style creates an edge to each piece of work created.
- Having a widespread team of artists at their advantage, allows an extensive contact base.

WEAKNESSES:-

- The exceptional uniqueness could result in potential loss of clients, but once again this would have to be down to personal preference.
- Events, pieces could become time consuming, increase in cost.

Enterprise - How will I promote myself ?

Essentially the best way for myself to get seen and get my work out there, is to take up opportunities that will benefit my career in design. Being selective is crucial in order to get noticed in a particular industry of interest. For example, producing and designing my own t-shirt designs will allow the market to buy the product and also my Illustration.

Freelancing is something I aspire to be successful in, as I do not want to tie myself down to any particular field or agency. Using social networking, business cards and creatively contact professionals and areas of interest (clients) will enable a chance to one, showcase my work and two notify the potential employee my aims and what I can achieve for them.

By allowing myself to create pieces of print (zines, screen prints, business cards, t-shirts, flyers etc.) will not only give me the means necessary of developing those skills, but also allow a potential client to see my skills through areas of design.

Enterprise - Where are they ? How will they find me?

WHERE ARE MY POTENTIAL CLIENTS/EMPLOYERS LOCATED ?

As this is a broad question to answer, I think I will use examples of cities/areas of industry and potential clients in order to appropriately select.

- UK
* Leeds
* London
* Bristol

- Germany
- Australia

- Independent Clothing Lines
- Skate Shops
- Hardcore/Metal Bands
- Record Labels

In order to reach these, technology will play an important advantage to this as there are now a number of different effective methods to contacting professionals/clients worldwide. Such as; e-mails, websites, blogs, social networking and also more traditional methods like letters, mail and face-to-face conversation.

WHAT MEDIA DO MY POTENTIAL CLIENTS/EMPLOYERS USE ?

It would be wrong for me to write limited uses of media that each client/employer could potentially use as I strongly feel that there should never be any limitations in approaches to using media creatively.

Primarily, I would expect the majority of the clients/employers that I am interested in to be using digital, print, mural and hand crafted media. Each one of these can effectively relate to the other, this is what could ultimately set a difference between other existing collectives. Software such as Illustrator and InDesign or most of the creative suite would be essential in allowing a piece of work to be applied across a wide media of products.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO COMMUNICATE AND HOW DOES IT MATCH WHAT YOUR CLIENTS/EMPLOYERS NEED ?

Communicating visually would have to be the most defined direction I could take my work in. By utilising my Illustrative skill to produce limited t-shirts and merchandise will itself generate my work to the wider audience of like minded individuals. As I want to push my style towards character design, would put me in a much more key position. From this the application would be the main basis in which I would need to effectively use creatively.

The main industry that I am interested in approaching and working within is Illustration. Although this subject covers a broad range of techniques and routes in which I could use my skills to appropriately produce work, I want to forward it to creating murals/artwork/clothing that ultimately build up a collection of my artwork.

In order to achieve this, I need to keep pushing my Illustration forward in order to create a style that ultimately reflects myself as a designer and also brings something different to the table. As I'm aware of constant collaborations and the finer, non-marketed mass media design collectives and artists, I feel that this is where I want to place myself in the industry. Keeping everything true to myself and like minded individuals.

Taking into account what I am constantly learning throughout this course is for one, preparing myself for all the essential skills and information needed to peruse my trade but also allowing myself to decide on areas which I dislike and enjoy. Allowing myself to develop a better understanding of where I want to be. If I'm going to achieve something with my work, I need to be as professional and creative as possible by not allowing myself to decide limitations.

Cost of Living

Only just got round to putting this up, with that I mean I've forgotten about it. Filling out has made me realise I'm going to spending a lot of money when I leave uni. Although I couldn't fill everything out in the form because realistically I'm unsure about a lot of it, I can't say I do or spend a lot of money on things regularly enough to make a decision on how much annually I'm spending.

Here's the form -

Enterprise - Lecture 2

Todays lecture was more focussed on the business side to becoming a creative. There a number of rules we should follow and research is key to progression. It ties in nicely with what I know I'm learning on BAGD because we are constantly pushed to develop our understanding in the design world. With that, I can utilise these skills to generate a further understanding to actually becoming a working professional.

Enterprise - Who am I, Who are they? / Study Task 1

Monorex -

Nude Design Studio -

Pentagram -

What skills / interests you have and how they relate to the needs of your client group?

Illustration has to be my most successful skill that I acquire in terms of design. Although this isn't solely focussing on Graphic design, it still has the fundamentals to what makes design effective. By being able to create images that are from my mind will allow me fulfil the clients need of a product. Being able to produce stylised Illustrative pieces that ultimately can be placed on any piece of design necessary to the brief, would allow a client to visually see the effect of a problem being solved.

What skills are needed and what skills do you want to develop?

At the moment my main focus is developing my typographic and digital illustration skills in order to successfully create my ideas effectively. Without these skills it would not be possible to be a Graphic Designer, in my eyes. If you do not know the key factors of type and what to look for when creating design, the outcome will be extremely poor and lack of thought would be clearly seen.

What are your professional/creative aims and how do they relate to the needs of the client group?

By being professionally driven to determine the effectiveness of my design outcomes, would relate with the clients needs in any given brief. This is due to the fact, that I want to be able to have the professional industry finish to my work that would be easily reflected on the creative aspects of my focus.
