PPD - Spreading the Word / Task 6

†††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††

At the moment I do not want to increase the amount of websites I am using to showcase my work, as I feel that most of them would become redundant and a dead space. Wasting my own time and possibly potential clients and contacts. To begin with I started running a Facebook page, where I was able to spread a few pieces of my work and Illustrations amongst friends and mutual acquaintances. As I found that most of my most inspiring illustrators base themselves around getting work out with this approach alongside other social media sites. My tumblr has only recently progressed into action, as I am not more comfortable with the overall layout, navigation and understanding of the site. With this at the moment I am going to use this as the main basis as to where my website falls, or would be in the future.

º

Primarily showcasing my work, personal illustrations and anything creative that I have been doing. Although it is only recently that I have decided to start using it effectively. It has allowed me to understand the full potential of the site.

Facebook - mitchweaverillustration
º

The first step I took into involving myself within an online presence as it became easily accesible running next to my personal Facebook page. The majority of inspiring illustrators and designers that I follow, also uses this as a promotional advantage to displaying themselves and their practice.

Full Circle / Live Art -
º
A recent art exhibition and event held at full circle, where a group of students studying art & design interdisciplinary showcased some of the most recent projects. With this I was asked to participate in live illustration piece alongside another artist. Although this was not a huge event with a lot of people, I still was able to produce a piece of work in front of an audience. Where they were able to ask me about my work and even analyse my process. Some comments I found personal and unsettling to say the least, because I had not experienced a reception like that before. Altogether though I found this a boost in my confidence and direction with my practice.

PPD - Making Your Mark / Task 5

Although I see myself as an Illustrator, I also want to incorporate all of my design skills alongside both practices. The chosen logo, for now anyway has been created by taking both my initials M & W together. Effectively each letterform mirrors one another, allowing an almost infinite symbol to be created. With this in place, I can now transfer the logo alongside bodies of text that could ultimately build up a range of self promotional products.

Logo -

Business Card -

Although this is still yet to be printed, as I feel there is something lacking with the overall aesthetics and overall layout of the design. Realistically I want to show my illustrative practice in a more prominent visualisation in order to allow a clear reception from my chosen audience.

Letter Head -

Taking what I have already created with my business card, in terms of the layout, information but applying it to a new context. A letterhead would be mainly hand written to allow the contact, or recipient receive a piece of information or even a hand drawn sketch.

Furthermore to my own development, over the upcoming months I am going to thoroughly explore and evaluate how I can push my designs further to allow much more in depth presence. I need to be efficient and effectively utilised my own skills in order to achieve the desired brand and identity.

PPD - What is a Creative CV ? / Task 4

CURRENT CV -

Realistically, this is not a creative C.V at all, but it's a start. I created this earlier this year, with the sole aim to have something down that I could potentially use to apply for jobs. Design directed and mundane. Since then I now need to consider re designing the layout and overall aesthetic of this with my new identity. Keeping a creative document alongside a formal one to separate them both and their differences.

PPD - Samples of Work / Task 3

1. Jordan Puopolo

Simple and clean cut promotional design, extended with a product range as a contextual set. What I find particularly interesting about the pieces of promotional material, how it works together. The choice of stock, spot colour and dimension ratios allow a clear sense of unity within the work.

2. Foreign Policy 2009 Calender

A calendar created by Foreign Policy that represent a visual connection between an expansion of the studio into a new country. From New York to Singapore. As their name itself stands alone as a much more political association, they have managed to play on this slightly by creating an informative context within the overall design of the calendar. An effective approach to promotion to say the least.

3. Noem 9 Studio

Illustrative, image based promotional design created by Noem 9 to expand the practice they focus on alongside products it could be based on. As a set of images, each piece of work and design relates effectively against one another, incorporating type, image and colour. This approach to promotion is something myself as a designer, should be looking to creating. By doing this I would be able to create a sense of consistency with myself and my work.

4. Hydro 74

Although these are relatively old now, I remember seeing these business cards or should I say coin last year. Created by Hydro 74, a professional designer and illustrator who has an archive of constantly growing pieces of work. What I admire the most about his approach to designing work, is the intricate and well crafted digital Illustrations that create an identity of style. This again is something I can start to work towards myself, pushing the creativity in promotion.

5. Fuscare Clothing

This is a clothing company called Fuscare, who's current line of apparel revolves around up to date trends and symbology. The promotional design work and illustrative t-shirt designs are something I find appealing within my own interests. Although there is not an extensive overall visual aesthetic, the overall presentation, that is targeted towards the audience. Works effectively and creativity.

Final Presentation - Level 5

ı

Final presentation boards for the end of the current year / level 5. Most of the boards contain a large amount of my illustrative practice as I feel this is what bests defines myself as a designer at the current stage. My ambitions as of now are to push this further out into the industry and develop a method of effective promotion, visual identity & presence.

InspireCreate Leeds - Entry

Earlier in the year I sent in a piece of work to a website called inspirecreate leeds. The overall idea was to select a few entrants where a voting cast was put against each piece of work, to decide who the finalist would be. Although I was not lucky enough to get that far, it still allowed a piece of my illustration to be displayed within the public view.

Tumblr - Page

=

Running a tumblr blog to showcase examples of my own personal work and also a few of the final outcomes I have produced within the modules. The way the overall site works and is put together, allows a creative network of professional and upcoming designers to allow themselves exposure and promotion. This is something that I need to utilised effectively to allow an expansion of my design network.

Initial Business Card Ideas

Ú

These are nothing much, but just a start as to how I might start putting together my own business card and creating a passable piece of identity. At the moment I am trying to consider how I can incorporate hand rendered drawing, with digital design. This is what I think effectively sums up my overall style of design.

Pretty much sums up the same technique I take on drawing. It just happens.

Facebook Illustration Page

σσσσσσψψψϑϑϑϑϑϑ

I've been running my own page on Facebook for a while now, it seems to be going alright. Realistically, it is the social networking site that I use the most. So it made sense to actually to start promoting myself on there. The overall layout, upload of images and communication is fairly simple to use and with that I find it more effective to run.

Although it hasn't massively spread out, I have still started to manage a presence that hopefully could allow a wider audience to see my work.

Progress Tutorial - 15/03/12

Î

Today's tutorial was exactly what I needed in order to progress and understand exactly what it is I should be doing. Fred was brutally honest, and gave me the advice that I needed. The questions I asked were appropriate to my own development as I now have an understanding of the direction I should be taking, the thought process and categorisation of my blog.

Realistically I have been more than lost, not really relating the pieces of design I have been looking at to my own practice, the route I thought I wanted to take, is not actually the approach I want to go. I need to keep asking why, and this is what I am going to do from now on.

PPD - Seminar / Direction

-

Todays workshop / seminar has been particularly useful in understanding key factors within the industry that need to be considered. Working in a group and putting together a list of points that need to be incorporated within industrial experience and professional research. Especially when you are contacting studios, freelancers and working professionals. From this I now have a much more defined direction and idea as to how I should approach my own professional development

Akala - Find No Enemy

-

Lyrically amazing, speaking the truth. An eyeopener from someone elses perspective of our world. What lies beneath our own hatred and insecurities. An inspiration to say the least.

Blog Re-Design

To make everything flow more efficiently and effectively whilst producing my design work and documenting appropriate research and productive development, this is my new blog layout. I've tried to generate a corresponding theme of colour and layout across each different blog page to keep everything together.

We, The Masses

Extremely morbid animation, in what I interpret to being the drowning of the consumerist mass market, living amongst each other only to be led to the same shallow end.

For all the people that moan about tags, this is beautiful.

Feed The Rhino

Again another great hardcore video from Feed The Rhino. Using black and white throughout to create a sense of a colourless attitude shown through their music. Good stuff.

Wouldn't mind giving something like this a go myself, should probably get a video camera out at some point soon...

Brutality Will Prevail

Although this video was intended for another piece of music, who ever has chosen to rip a BWP track over it has gave it a more interesting feel throughout. The angst from the musicians realtes respectively with the video allowing a phoenix of fear.

Stunning.
