Robotic Beauty

A fairly recent illustration from my personal work. Still trying out different styles and approaches to creating work, with the intent to develop a more defined and effective practice. This piece was based around a portrait of a woman, with a focus on cybernetic modification. I was watching a lot of the big bang theory over summer, and this inspired me to take some quotes and puns and place them into my work.

Level 06 - Summer Presentation

Summer presentation. The majority of the slides are focussed around my illustrative practice I took on over the months I was back at home. Motivated through misery, something I hold close to my sanity. As I found it very difficult to open up any opportunities due to my background. Anyway moving on, I still managed to develop different approaches and styles to my practice, which I plan on capitalising this year. Mainly developing a context in which the illustration can be appropriately applied. What I aim to do this year is creatively use product, range and distribution to even more further my Illustration.

No Goss! - Leeds / Live Art Show

-

Last weekend I participated in a live art event at the independent No Gloss! film festival alongside local artists ( CBLOXX, Jaypee, Diaz57and Gx2 ) The theme of the piece was to create a visual illustration that related around the content of a chosen film. Although the actual venue was slightly small, it still managed to pack a good crowd. The majority of the people to turn up, were obviously there for the films. But that aside, it was nice to see people turning up for the art.

Anyway, my piece was based around a film called Scarecrow by James Arden. The overall impression and feel I got from the short film was an extremely mellow, morbid and instinctively depressing. Taking that, and visual aspects from the production. I began to start a piece of work that reflects not only personally but represents a context in which the audience could relate to.

After the artists had finished their pieces, they were put up to auction. Where people from the festival could place an amount that they felt fitting to the artwork. What I did not expect at all was for someone to bid on some of my work and how much they wanted to pay for it. £70 is the current bid, and I am still a bit overwhelmed. More so the fact someone that has never seen any of my work before, thinks that it is worth so much.

One Colour Illustration

-

Recently I went back to Illustrator and carried on developing an effective style and approach to my own design work. With this in mind, I have continued to focus on using a very limited colour pallet. Instead of applying multiple colour values, I have taken one and allowed a series of tints to compliment and exaggerate specific areas of the drawing.

This has made me realise that I could continuously develop this further, applying textures and structural depth in order to expand my Illustrative knowledge. Something I know I can keep pushing further in order to progress as an Illustrator.

The final pieces I feel represent my own style, or developing style clearly. This is something I want to predominantly work on, to distinguish my work from the rest. By mocking up a potential artist to the design and logo. I feel I could start to target my work towards this market. Music.

Photoshop Digital Rendering - Attempts

Spent today and last night attempting and practicing some concept art. Although, I did find this extremely difficult as understanding how colour, form and light work or not my biggest strengths. I began with a sketch and use photoshop to build up colour and depth, creating a monster/environmental like piece. Concept art is not something I would normally try, but I feel there are a lot of attributes that I can capitalise within my own Illustrative practice.

Little White Lies - 20 Minute Stallone Sketch

Yesterday Little White Lies magazine asked the readers / supporters on their facebook page to quickly draw up a portrait of Sylvester Stallone, to celebrate the release of Expendebles 2. So I thought I would submit a piece of work, although I did not win the competition. I still now have an Illustration piece on their page, that is open to the public.

With a strict deadline and time limit I decided to loosely draw out a characterised version of Stallone, depicted from Rambo. I feel that this would have been appropriate to the simplicity that was asked.

Large Scale Canvas - Illustration / Painting

The last couple of days I have been painting and drawing on a fairly large canvas, that was given to me and rescued by my girlfriend. Luckily it was what I needed, in a couple of ways. Obviously for practice, within my current Illustrative direction. And also, an essential idea of how the piece I will produce at live art event in Leeds. Might actually look.

Here's the final piece, from start to completion.

Wolf Digital Illustration - Current Practice

-

Over the passed few weeks I have been working on a lot of different personal Illustrations, experimenting with different techniques and media. The one below is my latest digital piece of work as this is appropriate to my future practice and ties together with design.

I generated this image from a series of steps, first drawing out and outline, importing the image onto Illustrator then carefully going around the drawing. Overall I feel fairly confident with the direction I am going, although it is not as near as good as I want to be. Practice, practice and more practice will get me where I want to be.

Gloss This! - Live Artist Invite

Recently I have been invited to be a live artist at the upcoming Leeds Film Festival No/ Gloss, which is being held over the 8th-9th of September. I am actually really surprised that somebody has taken time to look at my work and actually ask to take part, alongside some well known local artists.

ELCAF 17/06/2012

To be honest I should have blogged this a while back, but for some reason or other I just haven't got round to it. Anyway, the East London Comics & Arts Festival was happening on the 17th of June, shortly after my return from Leeds. So me and my brother decided to travel down to London and check it all out.

Initially we did not really know what to expect, who was going to be there and how the whole event was going to pan out. With this in mind, we managed to to make our way there, through the miserable depths of what is London. An almost impossible journey to say the least. On our way I managed to take a pictures of some of the street art and graffiti littered around Shoreditch. As much as this is a common, generic procedure of tourism attraction, I still found some of the murals and paintings exceptionally well crafted and wonderful. It seems to be, okay to create pieces of artwork, graffiti on the walls of this part of london but in a weird cultural approach. As the whole atmosphere seems to be extremely pretentious, and benign in some ways. I'm guessing the majority of London is like this though, unfortunately.

One of the main reasons for actually going to the event was to ultimately meet Mcbess. An Illustrator I have idolised for the passed couple of years or so. Luckily I managed to but only briefly, not long enough to actually hold a conversation on artwork and whatnot. Anyway, he was an inspiring dude to say the least.

The overall event, contained a huge number of comic illustrators and publishers. Unfortunately I found it hard to speak to them all as the large crowd that had turned up. Those I did manage too, told me about a few of their techniques within screen printing and other processes.

-
I picked up a few comics, short stories and prints whilst at the festival and managed to speak to a few of the artists featured at the event. What I found the most interesting and useful, within my own creative field. Was the overall application, promotion and culture in which the illustrators reside in. Taking this, with also the quality of screen printed publications I feel I could try and incorporate this into my own practice, to effectively allow myself to become a more successful and professional designer.

- Met Mcbess, super cool dude.

Business Card - Another Design

After my presentation, Yaf advised me that my original logo fit much better to myself as a professional and my current practice, Illustration. With this I took the original logo and changed the type to allow legibility and clear focus to piece of text. From these digital designs, I am going to create a duplex set of business cards, each with a drawing on the back. Allowing every business card to be different.

Under Godless Skies - TICKET

A ticket design for a local Coventry metal band called Under Godless Skies. Although it is not much, it is still a piece of work that will be out in the public domain.
