MWI Current Online Presence
-
My computer programming friend hooked me up with a free web domain for a year and showed me how to link it to my current tumblr. Although this not a fully functional website, it still has a base where people can now associate my work with a proper online presence. Sometime between now and graduation I aim to get a fully coded, working website with linked pages developed in my own time and alongside working with someone else.

Still up and running, the easiest basis and definitely one of the biggest, if not the most extensive social network of today. Although It hasn't really moved anywhere since last year, I still use it as a potential way of reaching out towards a further market. From this I have had opportunities to design illustration work for my friends. It's a starting point.
SYN - Illustration Collaboration with Elise Photography
-
Over the summer holidays my friend Elise asked me to work with collaborating with a photoshoot that she had recently done for a fashion editorial magazine called SYN. As my illustrative work had a chance to be published in a magazine, I felt this could be an ideal opportunity to extending my work out into the industry. The initial concept was to use imagery that related to a 'girly girl' in love and a tomboy with attitude. Taking this and the overall photographs, I have utilised subtle pieces of imagery together with the photographs allowing a contrast and nothing overpowering.
You can see the final images on pages 134 - 143.

Monorex Creative Agency
These would have to be my current number one studio I would like to work with. I have previously spoken about them before throughout my earlier PPD posts, and have contacted them last year about a visit. Unfortunately I did not manage to go down and see them as creatives. Saying that I need to get back in contact with them ASAP in order to rearrange a visit and also apply for a possible internship that they host regularly.
I feel that my own practice would be synergetic to them as a creative agency as the predominantly work with illustrative practices, large scale murals and retail based clients. This is something I aim to be doing at some point throughout my career. There is a clear sense of hand crafted, hard work throughout this company and involvement with a more street styled illustrative route. They also run 'Secret Wars' a worldwide battle where illustrators / artists compete against each other over 90 minutes to produce black & white murals ultimately taking the opponent down.
All together I feel that the overall ethics, approach and portfolio of this company is reflective to myself as a designer and synergetic with an approach I want to take as a practice throughout my career. Revolving around environmental graphics, large scale murals and illustrative practices.
Contacting -
1. E-mail - Obvious but the easiest / PDF work attachments with the mai.
2. Post - Hand written letter / Piece of illustration work.
3. Studio Visit - A one-to-one basis where I can speak to the creatives about their work.
4. Social Networking - Through different media such as, twitter, facebook & tumblr.
5. Illustration - Possible piece of work directly relating to them as a studio.
6. Publication - Promoting myself as a designer / illustrator sent directly to them.

Five Studios
-
Finding five particular studios relevant to my own practice seems to be difficult as I do not want to predominantly work within a graphic design environment in general. Below are a list of creative agencies, artists, vinyl toy makers and printers that I feel I could potentially work alongside or collaborate with.
1. Monorex Creative Agency
Without a doubt Monorex is probably one of my favourite creative agencies I've came across. Last year I contacted them about a visit which unfortunately did not happen due to a double booking. That hasn't put me off at all though, I've recently contacted them again about another visit, which I'm waiting on for a reply. The main reason I find this agency potentially synergetic is the approach to the work it produces. Everything is predominantly visual, focussing on murals, illustration and a more hands on approach with clients. They seem to be working a lot with retail brands such as Reebok, Umbro and Adidas. Something I would eventually like to get involved with myself as a creative. Ultimately It would be extremely useful to actually see how they work in order to broaden my understanding of the industry.
2. HEART Studio
I came across HEART studio a while ago through a band called Gold Kids on Anchors Aweigh records. What instantly amazed me was the overall quality and intricate detail each illustration and piece of design work has. No corners cut here. The only main issue I have is they are based in Italy, and unfortunately I cannot see myself venturing there any time soon. That aside, I plan to contact them and ask them about their creative process within the industry. Their works mainly involve t-shirt designs, screen prints and type work for bands and clothing companies. Aesthetically there is a clear relation to the culture and people involved, again the direction I want to take my own work in. As they are printed based designers I feel that my own practice could potentially be synergetic to this studio.
3. Dude Box
Vinyl toy creators who produce a platform for artists to collaborate and put their own mark on custom product. What makes them more appealing is they are based in the UK, London. Making it easier to reach and contact. Looking through their website and product range, it is clear they want to 'inspire to create' a mission statement in which they live by. As application is the most important route to any aspiring illustrator, there is a clear relation to utilising their custom toy range to your own in order to further a potential reach of client audience. Either collaborating with them as an illustrator utilising one of their products would be beneficial, or even working within their studio and factory would allow a further investigation into this particular industry.
4. Nobrow Press
Nobrow Press in my eyes are probably one of the best comic book producers. The quality of each magazine and book they produce has a definite feel of dedication and justice to the artists / illustrators that have contributed. Last summer they were based at the East London Comic & Arts Festival, which I had the opportunity to go down and visit. Speaking with them about their work and what they do in terms of practice was important in gaining my own understanding to how I could myself further my illustration within the creative industry. Looking through their website they have internships available, something that I am particularly interested in to allow myself a chance to build up a network and potential opportunities. As they are a essentially a printing firm, it would allow a greater understanding within production processes and marketing.
5. Skull & Heart
Skull & Heart are an East London based printing agency that produced and work with some of the best illustrators / artists from the UK and internationally. As they are more of a collaborative company, they produced prints with with their logo incorporated and a brief related directly related with the artists interpretation. Although they are not strictly a studio, I feel it would be interesting to work with them as the produced print process driven visual works with a high quality finish. This is something I aim to develop as a designer and hopefully promote my own print range, where I can sell my illustrations to a wider market, learning valuable skills alongside.

MWI&D / New Logo
-
New year, new logo. Seems to be the current progression of my current professional branding. At the moment this most recent design, I feel is more balanced and reflective of my own practice and myself as an individual. The silhouette represents a 15mm marker, if it isn't already obvious. Utilising one of my many tools of my trade, with my name and what I do. Seems to come across quite effectively. Straight to the point.

Concept Crit - Feedback
-
Feedback given by some of my peers from the concept crit yesterday. Although most people are at different stages of the module, I felt that what I am currently doing is reflecting my own practice in the right direction. The majority of the feedback was extremely useful and it has been made clear to be I need to consider type more thoroughly and start working towards publications to display my Illustrations for the current brief.

Group Tutorial Feedback Form
-
Feedback form from this mornings tutorial with Amber. I now realise that how I have been attempting to plan out the module and how I should approaching it are two different things. Trying to structure everything into a day-by-day method is not going to be the best way to keep creative. I should be looking at balancing out each brief between others, allowing myself to keep motivated and hopefully more organised.

Tasks - Tutorial

5 Things I did not know before the break ...
-Illustration is what I am going to do for definite as a career and throughout my final year. As I feel more confident through practicing more thoroughly throughout the recent summer.
- I now realise that in order to be successful through design, I need to bring more to the table than just 'graphic design' meaning, hardcore music is one of my many interests. I aim to eventually produce album artwork / merchandise designs for bands.
- Becoming freelance straight after graduation may not be the most ideal route to take financially. In order to build up my funds, I need to think about working within a studio for a few years.
- Self promotion should be taken more seriously and I need to focus on pushing myself to create a presence online, industrially and physically with my design work. This would allow me to have a better chance of gathering clients.
- Time is more valuable than I actually realised. Eventually after graduation every minute counts, in order to meet deadlines and actually get paid for doing a design / illustration job.
5 Things I would do differently...
- Make the most of what I do have around me. Limits are possibilites after all. Even though summer hasn't been particularly eventful, productive due to my background. I should be focussing more on what I do have and less on what I don't.
- Focus on contacting professionals and building up contacts. Considering the amount of time I had 'free' I did not capitalise on this. Something I particularly regret.
- Create a means to create money with my practice. Although saying that I did not have the means, motivation or even the mindset. I won't go into too much detail on that though.
- Promote myself, at least once a week. In a creative approach. Saying that I do put my illustrations on facebook and tumblr, although they just seem to build up a small audience and nothing has yet come directly from it. I guess that is down to be to consider.
- Think about who I do know. This could have led to some potential design work, possibly not paid but at least I might have actually put my work into the public domain. `
5 Things I will address this semester...
- Design strategy. Logically this is an essential part to completing level six, but I need to create and apply my skills / practice to an effective work rate. Something I should be constantly working towards.
- Where I actually am going ? At the moment I have literally no idea, or if so very vague. The actual direction I am going to be taking my practice towards. Must work on this weekly.
- Application is crucial. I need to effectively place my illustrations onto formats, that directly speak to the audience through visual communication.
- Context. Similar to the above, but making my illustrations relevant to the subject matter. Would allow a more in depth, clear practice to completing a brief.
- Finances. I need to consider working out an effective and essential financial plan to allow myself the best start after my graduation. Otherwise, I think I am going to be screwed.
5 Things I feel we could address as a group...
- Presentation skills. I feel that this would be useful as it would allow our year group to be more confident, if not already in speaking to a crowd.
- Putting together, financial strategies. Although this could relate to the enterprise module from last year, I feel it would benefit us to refresh on it.
5 Things I would like to know about professionalism...
- As an illustrator especially freelance, what is the most effective approach to take to create clients ?
- What are the first and foremost crucial steps to take to becoming a success ?
- As you do need to make an income out of this, what is the best route to take to find a balance between personal projects and making money ?
- In the illustration industry, is it important to have a visual style to your work ? Or should it be contextually developed to suit the brief ?
- How do you make the most out of a conversation between a client and yourself, potentially increasing the amount of payment you will receive ?

LOGOS
Logos: At the moment I have a number of different logo designs that I am not actually sure about using. Mainly because I get bored easily with something, especially if it is the visual identity to myself. With these I want to collect feedback that would allow me to develop an further my development of branding Mitch Weaver Illustration ©
Self Promo : Sketchbook Volume One
Thursdays task to create pieces of promotional media, alongside our current business card. By putting this together I was surprised by how much work, Illustrative based. I actually had to place in a document. Knowing this I could now send this out, potentially to studios, or professionals for feedback and potential placements.
The overall design of the publication was to incorporate a sketchbook, with my pieces of design work inside. As a volume, or set series. This could be developed further to increase the amount of exposure I could be getting as a designer.
