1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
Throughout this module I have developed my understanding of design principles, colour, layout and typography, which has allowed me to produce work with a clearer meaning through communication. From the Illustrator lessons I have learned new processes that have helped me create designs in a number of projects. These skills and knowledge will definitely help me in future modules and briefs.
2.What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
By using my design context blog, I was able to build up a number of artists/designers that influence and inspire me through my own work. I can always refer back to them for reference and find even more creative people out there to help me understand what Graphic Design is all about. Without doing this I don't think I would be able to produce work that I am happy with as they have pushed me to develop my designs.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
Looking at my own work and asking my self what needs to be improved can be quite difficult. Not because it's already perfect, It can be quite challenging to identify areas that need improving and how I should approach it. This is something that will be on going and always a key factor to design work, without your own judgement I don't think you would be able to create design work effectively.
4. What weakness can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
There's never enough development. I normally write down a few ideas, find the one which is most appealing to me. Then start creating a design and layout depending on what the brief is. This is where I can stuck, as I don't have enough ideas to backtrack on and then work out why it doesn't work. I think this definitely my biggest weakness.
5.Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
- Development! Spend more time generating ideas that will eventually produce a number of different outcomes.
- Blogging. I let myself get behind during this first month, which meant my work piled up. From this I now know to blog things straight away.
- I need to be more engaged design that is happening around us now in all contexts not just the artists that appeal to me.
- Time management will always be an issue to me, there never seems to be enough hours in the day which is crazy. It's something that I need to work on and start building an effective system to work with.
- I want to incorporate my illustrations into my work more, but I haven't mastered how to do this yet without ending up drawing irrelevant images to the brief.

Poster Crit Feedback

" No news Is good news" - Research
For this project, I found an interesting article in the sun. A bit of a unreliable newspaper you could say, but the headline was appealing. ' SHUNT FOR RED OCTOBER '
The opening paragraph clearly gets your attention and left me asking all kinds of questions. 'A major investigation was under war to how the Royal NAvy's new nuclear submarined got STUCK on rocks'.
I managed to get a few opinions on the article with various different views. One thing that seemed to come up the most was, the expenses paid out to the military at a economic decline right now.

Alphabet Soup: Part 2 - Evaluation.
Which personality trait did you choose to respond to and apply the typeface ?
I chose to incorporate the adjectives 'construction' and 'enthusiasm' through the majority of the typeface as I felt they stood out the most, when gaining information from my partner.
What are the reasons behind the design decisions you have made for the typeface ?
I felt keeping the typefaces as simple as possible and only using slight changes, created a much more clearer representation of Niall.
In what ways are the results effective ?
The idea and concept itself were effective in creating an initial design to work with, but the final outcome needed more logic applied to create a consistent typeface.

Alphabet Soup: Part 2 - Final Images
These are a few images I have taken of my final created typeface for the Alphabet Soup project. I have also included relevant development to create a clearer understanding to what I was trying to achieve.
How to .. Rational.

I intend to solve the problem of cooking a healthy meal in 15 minutes whilst being a student at university, by visually communicating s chosen method of design.
What do you need to communicate ?
I need to communicate a set of recipes effectively through visual imagery and also create a concept for how the product could be produced.
Why do they need to know ?
The target audience, students. Need to know how to cook healthy food, in limited time and limited costs.
What will they respond to ?
They will respond to the recipes by using the USB stick to learn how to cook their own meals.
Where do they go ?
The USB sticks will be handed out accordingly or be put on sale for a minimum cost.

Alphabet Soup: Part Two Rational

I intend to create a full alphabet typeface, with 6 glyphs that represent a fellow class mate chosen by random. My partner was Niall.
Who is your audience?
My chosen partner and others in the class.
What do they need to know?
They need to know why the typeface is relevant to them and how I made it purposely represent their personality traits.
Why do they need to know?
The brief is based on my partner, so they have to be award of my concept and why it's relevant to them.
What will they respond to?
The typeface should visually communicate the character of the person clearly, so it should speak for itself but also be legible and readable.
What research is required?
A general outline of the person/ Questions/

The word 'vanish' is being visually communicated through typography, by taking the word literally and exploring different ideas to make a letter vanish.
How well does this answer the brief?
I think my ideas answer the brief fairly well as I have been abled to develop a greater understanding on typography and the different elements that make up a letter form. My final idea met the brief, but I think I needed to spend more time developing it further, to give it that edge.
How well has the idea been visually explored?
I have explored the idea visually through using my own drawing skills and researching into possible outcomes, that led to ideas that make up the word 'vanish'. By doing this I was able to generate a better understanding and broaden my ideas.
What are the strengths of the resolution?
The final images stand out quite well as a sequence, they are bold, clear and the legible which I feel I have kept to the brief.
How could it be improved?
To improve my idea, I think I need to experiment with different skills other than drawing by hand to visually communicate the outcome. By doing this I would be able to create a more appealing image to the eye.

What roles did you take on in the group?
My role in the group was to design vegetable characters that would go on a memory stick lanyard, and various places in the pack we decided to create.
How well do you think you performed in the roles?
I think I have performed fairly well for the role I had to take, I knew exactly what a I needed to do and how the final images should look. Initially I thought the whole group would be working together on one thing, but we decided to have different roles throughout the project.
How well do you think you worked as a group?
I think there was a lack of communication at times, as I felt not everyone was clear on what role they were taking. We needed to give each other a clearer direction for the part in the design we were doing.
What were the positives of working in a group?
Working in a group allowed more than one mind to be used to solve a problem. This made it a lot easier to develop ideas, and achieve a final outcome, with the short space of time we had.
What were the negatives of working in a group?
Not everyone could agree on designs. There was also a lot of ideas not being taking into a account when coming up with a final outcome.
